Make Your Own Shea Butter Soap at Home
With the hot summer looming over us, many of us struggle to take care of our skin. Just like our body gets dehydrated, our skin needs to be moisturized constantly too. For one, you could use several lotions and moisturizers but some of the best moisturizers are really expensive. Therefore, you can try to make your own shea butter soap at home and your skin will really thank you for it.
Before going on to the recipe, you would probably want to know more about Shea butter. It’s a natural fat derived from the karite seed and is grown mainly in Africa. It melts at body temperature and makes your skin smooth and soft. You could buy this product either through Etsy, ebay or Amazon, but if that’s too much for you, you can call yellow pages or search online for Shea butter dealers in your own city.
Benefits of Shea butter
It has numerous healing properties that are going to work wonders on your skin. In fact, it is used as a main ingredient in several creams that work to remove stretch marks. In addition, it also contains cinnamic acid that helps the skin heal and be safe from the scorching sun. It works as an effective sun block and you don’t even have to invest in other sun blocks!
Apart from the beauty aspects of this wonderful substance, you can also use it to reduce stretch marks during pregnancy or use it to reduce eczema. Cuts and burns reduce after the application of Shea butter as it makes the skin very elastic too.
What you really need to buy
To prepare a soap that cleanses and moisturizes your skin, you need to make sure that you purchase Shea butter that is made of high quality. You will get options including refined and unrefined butter when you purchase them, but the unrefined ones work better than the refined ones. Refined Shea butter loses its fragrance and color, but unrefined natural Shea butter smells amazing and contains all properties required to heal your skin. If you have sensitive skin, unrefined Shea butter would be the best for you.
The best part of using Shea butter to make your own soap is that you don’t have to use a lot of it to gain all its benefits. About 3 to 5% used for your recipe would provide foamy lather, just like any other soap. However, you could also use all of it to make your soap but it might not provide lather.
As mentioned above, you can experiment with the percentages of Shea butter and decide what suits you best. If you are using about 3-5% of Shea butter, you will need:
- Two cups of Soap base like glycerin. Melt it in a double boiler but if you don’t have a double boiler, place a pan with water on the stove and place another pan on top of that with glycerin. This way, the glycerin melts slowly.
- 2 tbsp of Shea butter, but melt that separately using the same double boiler method.
- You can use any essential oil for fragrance but that’s optional.
- Mix all the ingredients together and pour it into a mold and wait till it cools down.
If you are using 100% Shea butter, you can also mix some castor oil so that it provides lather. You can also mix some olive oil and coconut oil along with the other ingredients mentioned above. The recipe is simple and doesn’t take a lot of time but melt the Shea butter slowly on low heat and see the difference with your own handmade soap.
